Liz Marley Laurel Counselling

Liz Marley

Laurel Counselling was set up in January 2010 and is owned and run by Liz Marley. After working for many years in the public, private and voluntary sectors, Liz began her counselling career in 2004.

  • HNC in Counselling Skills, 2004
  • Diploma in Couple Counselling, 2007, Relationships Scotland
  • Accreditation as Couple Counsellor, 2008
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling, 2008, University of Abertay
  • Masters Degree in Counselling, 2009, University of Abertay
  • Following the Masters, research paper investigating self-help strategies for emotional distress published in the Counselling & Psychotherapy Journal in 2011.
  • Diploma in Supervision, 2012
  • Diploma in Sex Addiction, 2015

In addition to her work as a private practitioner, Liz is now a supervisor of other counsellors for their individual and couple work. She regularly attends CPD (continuing professional development) courses each year to enhance her skills and keep abreast of new ideas, and is also a member of COSCA, the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland.

Liz sometimes refers clients on to other counsellors as appropriate, for example, for Psychosexual Therapy.  If this happens, clients can be assured that these therapists are also highly qualified and experienced.

Approach

There are a number of different types of therapy used in counselling such as psychodynamic, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), TA (transational analysis) or person-centred, each of which has specific ideas about the causes of and solutions to people’s problems.  While Liz often works with psychodynamic principles, ie recognising the importance of past experience on current behaviour, other approaches may be used to meet the specific needs of different clients.  However, regardless of theoretical model, clients will always be treated with empathy, respect and without judgement.   Therapy is usually short-term.
