What is sex addiction?

There has been some debate as to whether sexual addiction really exists, ie is it just strong sexual desire?  However, sexual addiction (also called hypersexuality or compulsive sexual behaviour) is a compulsive need to perform sexual acts to achieve a kind of "fix" , even though this behaviour has adverse consequences for many aspects of their lives.  People with sex addiction often deny there is a problem, even though their behaviour is out of control.

What are the signs of sexual addiction?

Some sex addiction behaviours may include:-

  • Compulsive masturbation
  • Persistent use of pornography
  • Cybersex - all aspects
  • Multiple affairs, one nigh stands or sexual partners
  • Practising unsafe sex
  • Paraphilias
  • Voyeurism
  • Using prostitutes
  • Exhibitionism
  • Sexual harassment

What are the effects of sexual addiction?

The addict may

  • Be preoccupied thinking about and planning sex, being sexual and recovering from their sexual experiences.
  • Be unable to resist their sexual impulses or reduce / stop their behaviour.
  • Continue their behaviour despite negative effects on work, family, relationships, social life, finances etc.
  • Increase the intensity, frequency, number of or risk in sexual behaviours to achieve the desired effect.
  • Hide or lie about their behaviour.
  • Feel guilt, shame, remorse or isolated from others.
  • Feel anxious, stressed or restless if unable to act out sexually.

People often come for help when a crisis happens, eg their partner discovers their behaviour, they are fired from their job or they are arrested.

How can counselling help?

Sex addicts have to learn to give up their compulsive and destructive sexual behaviours, not sex itself which is a normal, enjoyable part of being human.

Counselling can help you to:

  • Identify the triggers and causes of your sexual impulses,
  • Understand emotional issues that may contribute to your addiction,
  • Develop a plan to help you to cope differently to lead a normal, balanced sex life.
